Blotchy, lumpy, Yoshky! And Hide mid-blink. Or is he sleeping and has eyes painted on his eyelids?
What got you into j-rock?
Feb. 21 1996: I’m in a hotel in a suburb of Tokyo, my first hours in the country, jetlagged, exhausted but unable to sleep. I’m flipping through channels. I land on a TV spot for some album or tour featuring this crazy guy in a neck brace spazzing out on the drums and a wacky pink-haired nut running down a catwalk past thousands of fans screaming all DRESSED LIKE HIM!? All to some awesome metal song (“Dahlia”) and I SIT BOLD UPRIGHT focusing with every last ounce of being on every syllable the announcer is saying so I can figure out WHO THIS GROUP IS — there is no internet to check! — and I’m comprehending ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, til thank god the X Japan logo is splashed on the screen for the last second of the ad and the announcer goes “EKKS JAPON!” and I’m like, EUREKA, I know what I’m doing tomorrow!

Yoshiki to ‘start a new era of rock’
“But rock also has a human side, and has accidents and dramas in many senses… ”
“We’re living in a world of information overload, so we can’t just relax and listen to the music. It seems to me that we can’t do it for much more than about 30 minutes,” Yoshiki shared. He even admitted having no hesitation to “throw away completed songs.”
